General Product Description:
No matter which window treatment system you choose, Shelby Shutters by Dalphis, Inc.
will enhance the architecture of your home with the long lasting beauty of wood window furniture.
Shelby Shutters combine privacy, light control, energy efficiency and elegance, while still
maintaining the view. The end result is a valuable investment that offers these features with
minimal care over the lifetime of the home.
Engineering:
Initial engineering concerns are ones of shutter weights, window span, and maximum width
specifications. The term “span” is used to describe the distance covered by one or more shutter
panels collectively hanging off one common frame. As a general rule, when using 1-1/16” stock,
no more than four feet of shutter panel can hang off of any one frame without adding additional
support. Additional support is provided using T-Posts. A T-Post is a vertical support that divides
one large opening into two or more smaller openings.
Specifications Engineered By The Factory
- Allowances for proper fit – when “inside mount” is specified, factory deducts ⅜” from
the overall width and ¼” from the overall height to aid in installation adjustments.
- Stile, rail and frame size.
- Number of hinges required.

Steps For Determining The Number of Panels Per Opening:
- Choose the louver size and panel design.
- Shutter panel widths should be approximately the same size throughout the room (panel
width can vary from room to room depending on the window sizes).
- Consider fold pattern and shutter stacking for window and door operation.
- Strategic placement of panels (stiles and/or divider rails) can be used to hide unsightly
window hardware.
- Always consider aesthetics and function before making a final decision.
- Consider overall appearance from outside.
Special Treatments:
French Doors
Shutters can be mounted on French doors.
Options include mounting on the door itself or
mounting outside the door and trim, on the wall. Installing shutters on the door itself has mounting limitations created by the knobs, levers and
locks. Special cutouts frequently need to be made on the frame to allow room for operating these
items. Replacement locksets are available at hardware stores and home centers to project the
levers or knobs out in front of the shutter unit.

Custom Frames:
Custom frames are available to provide a more custom appearance. Please note: There is a
surcharge for custom frames and you should allow extra production time.
Measuring for T-Post***
To measure for T-Post placement, determine whether the frame is inside or outside mount.
Outside mount application is illustrated below. Inside mount applications are the same except
the measurement will begin inside the window casing.
***Important notes on T-post measurement: Always measure from left to right. Measurement
should be specified in the center of the desired T-post placement.
Measuring:
While measuring for manufacturing is done to the sixteenth (1/16) of an inch, measuring for
pricing quotes can be a less precise figure. As a general rule for pricing, when encountering
fractions, always round up to the next even inch.
Inside Mount
To measure for an inside mount shutter, measure the inside window in 3 to 4 places (width &
height). When filling out order form, use the smallest measurement. The factory will take a
3/8" width deduction and 1/4" length deduction from the sizes given.
Outside Mount
To measure for an outside mount shutter, measure the outside of the window in 3 to 4 places
(width & height). When filling out order form, use the largest measurement. The factory will
take no deduction from the sizes provided on outside mount shutters. This measurement
includes frames.
SQUARE FOOT PRICE DETERMINATION
To calculate square footage: Take the width times the length then divide your answer by 144.
IMPORTANT: Shelby and Cordova Shutters are priced to the 1/100th of an inch. There is no
rounding up to calculate square feet, as illustrated in the following example:
Example: For a Shutter 31 ¼” wide by 72 ½” tall:
●Width 31 ¼” x Length 72 ½” = 2265.63 square inches.
●2265.63 square inches divided by 144 = 15.73 square feet.
●15.73 square feet x sq. ft. price = net cost
(add surcharges for options, freight and tax if applicable).
Final Measure for Manufacture:
The measurements that are taken for the manufacture of shutters must be much more precise than
those used for pricing. These measurements are usually taken to the eighth (1/8) of an inch. If
they are not taken and recorded correctly, the shutter may not fit properly. This can require
considerable on-site re-working and increase the cost of installation. Also, the extra on-site time
will possibly cause the loss of customer confidence in both the designer and installer.
The best and least expensive insurance available is to hire a professional shutter installer to
perform the final measure. The installer’s job is to measure, check window size variation and
squareness, specify mounting strip requirements and prepare all necessary information for the
factory.
Ordering Shutters:
Each item below must be submitted to the factory upon ordering. You will be notified if
additional information is required. Orders are non-cancelable once materials are cut. Changes
to orders that are in production can be made at customer’s expense. All prices, terms and
specifications are subject to change without notice.

Inside Mount:
The greatest challenge to mounting a shutter inside a window casing is making both the window
and shutter appear square. The best installation choice is to use a Z-Frame.
Outside Mount:
Outside mount installations are generally considered to offer greater flexibility than inside
mountings on standard flat, rectangular openings. There is much more flexibility in adjusting for
height and width when installing frames. However, there are certain situations, specific to
outside installations, that create different challenges for the installer.
The primary consideration for mounting the frames on outside installations is ensuring that your
nails or screws penetrate deeply into the wood frame behind the drywall. This guarantees that
the frames are attached securely enough to the wall to hold the heavy wooden shutter panels.
The integrity of the frame installation is the foundation to trouble-free shutter operation and long
life.
Outside mount shutters often need to be projected out into the room to clear obstructions on the
window system or the wall. Window mouldings, sills, window cranks, door handles, locks and
latches, and tilt and clean windows are common obstacles. “Projection build-out” frames (such
as FBB & DFLB) are used to create a raised mounting surface to ensure unobstructed louver
operation.
Touch Up:
If shutters are installed properly, very little touch-up should be necessary. Only slight filler will
be required at the corner joints and in the nail holes on the frames. Common fillers are caulk and
filler sticks.
The factory will supply a small container of the exact same paint or stain used during the
manufacturing of the shutters. Shelby Shutters have a water based finish, which is more durable
and touches up better than lacquer. When applying this touch-up to painted shutters, it should be
put only where the filler was used. Care should be taken to not allow excessive touch-up paint to
come in contact with the factory applied finish.
When applying touch-up to stained shutters, the stain should be mixed with the filler material
before covering nail holes and corner joints. This is done because most filler materials will not
accept stains once they have dried.
Shipping:
Shelby Shutters will be preassembled at the factory. The frames will be knocked down and the
hinge pins will be pulled out prior to shipping. The frames will be individually marked
describing the opening number and the appropriate side. All panels will be stamped on top,
describing the opening number and panel layout. Included with your panels and frames will be a
hardware kit. The kit will include: hinge pins, dovetail (Hoffman) keys, hinge screws,
magnets, strike plates and a small container of touch-up paint or stain.
